DoorDash driver taxes

DoorDash driver taxes without the April panic

Dashing is self-employment. No tax comes out of a payout, DoorDash sends a 1099-NEC, and the whole bill lands at once unless you hold money back through the year.

Hate Ledger tracks each dash, logs your miles, keeps the tax reserve topped up, and shows what a delivery actually pays after fuel and wear.

What you owe as a Dasher

Net profit above roughly $400 brings 15.3% self-employment tax on top of income tax, and quarterly estimates if you expect to owe $1,000 or more for the year.

  • Self-employment tax estimated from live profit
  • Federal and state income tax layered on top
  • Quarterly dates with the amount due
  • Reserve set aside automatically from each deposit

Deductions delivery drivers miss

Most Dashers claim miles and stop there. The small recurring costs add up to real money across a year.

  • Miles from first accepted order to last drop-off
  • Hot bags, phone mounts, chargers and cables
  • Phone and data apportioned to dashing hours
  • Parking, tolls and bike or scooter costs

Is the dash worth it?

Base pay plus tip minus fuel and wear is the only number that matters. Seeing it per hour changes which offers you accept.

  • Earnings per hour and per mile by day of week
  • Fuel and maintenance netted off gross pay
  • Peak pay and challenge bonuses tracked separately
  • Compare DoorDash against your other apps side by side

Common questions about DoorDash driver taxes

Does DoorDash take taxes out of my pay?
No. Dashers are independent contractors, so nothing is withheld. You set money aside yourself and pay it through quarterly estimates or with your return.
When does DoorDash send a 1099?
You generally receive a 1099-NEC by the end of January if you earned $600 or more in a year. You still report the income if you earned less.
How much should I save for DoorDash taxes?
Around 25–30% of profit after mileage is a common starting point. Because mileage often removes a large share of gross pay, the amount owed is usually smaller than drivers fear.
Which miles count for DoorDash?
Miles driven while dashing — to the merchant, to the customer and between orders — count as business miles. Driving from home before you go online, and home again after, generally does not.
Can I track DoorDash alongside Uber Eats and Instacart?
Yes. Each app is tracked as its own income source while deductions stay pooled, so you file once but can still see which app pays best.
