Pricing questions
- Is there a free plan?
- Yes. The Free plan is free forever and includes the cockpit dashboard, manual entry and CSV import, automatic tax reserve, categorization rules, multi-currency display and one business. No card required.
- How much does Hate Ledger cost?
- Pro is $29 per month or $290 per year, and Business is $79 per month or $790 per year. Annual billing saves two months on either plan.
- Do I need a card to start?
- No. Every new account gets 7 days of Pro free with no card at all — open the account, create your business and record real money first. When you choose a paid plan, your first charge is 7 days after checkout, so you can still cancel before paying anything.
- Can I cancel at any time?
- Yes. Cancel from Settings in one click. Your plan stays active until the end of the period you already paid for, and you keep read access and exports to your data.
- Is Hate Ledger a QuickBooks alternative?
- It is built for owners who never want to see debits and credits. Double-entry runs invisibly underneath, and reports export as P&L, balance sheet, cash flow and Schedule C for your accountant.
- Can I run more than one business on one account?
- Yes. Pro covers up to two businesses and Business covers unlimited businesses, each with its own books, and you switch between them from the top bar.
What you are actually paying for
Hate Ledger is small business accounting software priced for owners who do the books themselves, in between the work that pays. Every plan starts with seven days of Pro, no card, and the price below is what you pay after that — no setup fee, no per-report charge, no surprise annual jump.
Free: keep a clean record
The free plan is a real ledger, not a trial stub. You can create a business, record income and expenses, import a bank CSV, categorise entries, set money aside for tax automatically and see your running cash position. It suits a side business, a first year of self-employment, or anyone who mainly needs a defensible record at tax time.
The limit is depth, not honesty: receipt reading, tax reports built for an accountant, a second business, the audit trail and team tools sit on the paid tiers. Nothing you enter on the free plan is locked away — if you never upgrade, you can still export everything you typed.
Pro: know what is safely yours to spend
Pro is built around one number: after tax money is set aside and known bills are counted, what is left that you can actually spend. It reserves a percentage of every payment you receive, tracks the reserve balance separately from operating cash, and shows the gap between the two every morning.
It also carries invoicing and quotes, receipt matching, the AI helper on every page, month-end and year-end archives, deck and report exports, and the calculators wired to your own figures rather than a blank form. For most sole owners and freelancers this is the plan that replaces a spreadsheet and a shoebox at once.
Business: more than one set of books
Business adds multiple businesses under one login, team members with roles — owner, manager, bookkeeper — payroll records, fixed assets with GAAP and tax depreciation schedules, leases, and a larger allowance of e-filed forms. It is the tier for an owner running two ventures, a fleet, or anyone who has invited an accountant and wants them working inside the same ledger instead of on a copy of it.
Access is scoped: an invited bookkeeper sees the books, not your billing details, and an accountant can bill you for a review without being able to mark their own invoice paid.
Monthly or yearly
Yearly is the cheaper way to pay if you already know you will keep the books going for a full tax year; monthly is safer if the business is seasonal or new. Switching between them does not lose data, and cancelling leaves your records readable and exportable rather than deleting them.
Refunds follow the published refund policy, and you can cancel from inside the app without emailing anyone or sitting through a retention call.
