Do I pay tax on DoorDash tips?

Short answer: yes. Tips are income, the same as base pay. Here's how they show up, what the new tip deduction does and doesn't cover, and how much to hold back.

01

Tips are taxable income

Every tip customers add in the app is paid to you as part of your earnings and reported on your 1099 alongside base pay. Cash tips count too, even though DoorDash never sees them.

02

The new tip deduction

A 2025 federal law lets many workers in tipped jobs deduct up to $25,000 of qualified tips from income tax for 2025 to 2028. It phases out at higher incomes, and rules for self-employed workers are narrower, so check whether you qualify before counting on it.

03

Self-employment tax still applies

Even where the tip deduction applies, it only reduces income tax. Tips are still part of your self-employment profit, so Social Security and Medicare tax (about 14% of profit) is still owed on them.

04

How much of a tip to keep back

Treat tips like any other earnings: set aside 25–30% of your profit after mileage and costs. If you qualify for the tip deduction, you can end up nearer the lower end.

FAQ

Does DoorDash report my tips to the IRS?

In-app tips are included in the earnings DoorDash reports on your 1099. Cash tips aren't, but you still have to report them.

Do I pay tax on tips if I made under $600?

Yes. The threshold only decides whether a form is sent. If your self-employment profit is $400 or more, you must file and pay self-employment tax.
