Do I need to file taxes for gig work?
Probably yes, even for a little side work. The rule that matters isn't whether a form arrives — it's how much profit you made.

The $400 rule
If your profit from gig work is $400 or more for the year, you must file a return and pay self-employment tax, even if you earned nothing else.
02
A missing 1099 doesn't change it
Apps only send a form above certain amounts. Whether one arrives or not, all gig income has to be reported.
03
What you file
Your usual return, plus a schedule showing your business income and costs, and another working out self-employment tax. Tax software or an accountant handles these.
04
Under $400?
You don't owe self-employment tax, but the income may still count towards income tax if you have to file for other reasons.

FAQ
I drove for a few weeks. Do I still file?
If your profit after mileage and costs was $400 or more, yes.
Can I deduct costs if I didn't get a 1099?
Yes. Report all income and deduct your business costs either way.
